Don't be fooled by the youth of this 13 year old Oyster Bay, NY
native. She may seem like a novice but, in fact, she has become an
old pro. Since the age of 10, Charlie Dane has been gigging around
the country with an acoustic guitar and a love of performing.
Dane has put everything she learned into her debut album, which took
2 years to create. "I wanted to show all the different sides and
types of music that I write. When I recorded the title track I was
really young (10!) and throughout the album my voice gets stronger
and stronger, which is what I want people to notice." she said. Like
the singer-songwriters of the 1960's and 70's, Dane writes her own
music and lyrics.
She has no specific formula for writing, ideas simply come to her.
"Sometimes I hum a melody and I try to come up with a lyric idea
that fits to it. I'll fool around on my guitar and see what chords
sound good. Everything just comes all together. Once I was in a
restaurant and I went into the bathroom and sang the idea for a song
into my phone. One time I had a song come to me when I was on an
airplane and looked out the window." The songs on Dreamland are
based on Dane's life, her dreams, hopes, fears, regrets, losses and
passions. In today's world most people would think and tell her
constantly that she should be auditioning for a TV talent show, but
she prefers the old school method of writing, recording and
performing live.
She believes that music is art and should be open for interpretation
and be subjective, and should not be a karaoke competition. Don
Chaffin of D-City studios produced Dane's album and contributed
lyrics and arrangement. Don was able to get the best of everything
out of Charlie, she feels it was a privilege to work with such a
talented musician and producer. You can find out more about Charlie
Dane from her website, which has music, lyrics, photos, videos, a
blog and her calendar of tour dates.
